We arrived in Airlie Beach and were excited to see this port as we had read much about it. It is definitely a beach town and having seen it now we realize we could have a spent day here.

The winds were high when we reached the harbor of Airlie Beach and it took a while before a decision was made to not use the ship’s tenders and use large water taxis to transfer passengers from the ship to Airlie Beach.

We took an Oceania tour called Airlie Beach – Then and Now. We wanted to fly over the Great Barrier Reef but all the tours through Oceania and other tour operators were sold out so we settled on this one not expecting much. We were wrong as we drove to the small town of Proserpine and visited a museum that was really outstanding.

Proserpine is a town and locality in the Whitsunday RegionQueensland, Australia. In the 2021 census, the locality of Proserpine had a population of 3,614 people.

There were sugarcane fields all along the drive to the town.

The sugar mill located in Proserpine, although we did not see large mounds of bagasse like we see in Raceland

In Proserpine we visited the museum and it was amazing. I will just post photos that Jackie and I took along with a couple of links if you want to look more into the museum.

Below are a number of photos we took during the visit.

After the museum we traveled to the Coral Beach Resort for tea and snacks. It is a beautiful location and further down in the photos we met someone that we had seen MANY times on television.

Coral Sea Resort

I had seen Verne Lundquist on the ship a few times but had not spoken to him. He and his wife Nancy shared a table with us at the Coral Sea Resort. The two of them are just super nice people and spent time talking and laughing over stories of his visits to LSU. I hope to see him more over the next 82 days to hear more of his stories. In talking with he and Nancy it should not be hard to catch up with him as they are basically across the hall from us on deck 11.

Here is a photo of us with Nancy and Verne and Janet who we have done a few excursions with. Just continue to meet super people on the World Cruise.

In Airlie Beach we visited a Woolworths to pick up a few things and then hit a liquor store for some replacement and a clothing store before walking back to the bus for the ride to the tender to return to the ship.

Before getting to the bus we decided to grab a quick pizza that was pretty good.

Sunset as we left the Airlie Beach pier heading to the ship.
